Do you hike in the winter? For me, it isn’t my favourite time of the year to get out, enjoy the fresh air and explore, but since we get several months of it around here, you have to roll with what you get. So here are a few of my gear suggestions of make your winter adventure potentially more enjoyable.

Features the grade west of the Namewaminikan River Trestle as it passes through a ballast pit known at Spur KI-21. At the west end of the pit, near Kinghorn Road, there was at one time a flag stop at Milepost 45 called the Sturgeon River Crossing.
On August 22, 1990, the rear portion of an eastbound train derailed on Canadian National’s now decommissioned Kinghorn Subdivision at the Namewaminikan River Bridge, Milepost 44.4. Numerous cars and the caboose left the rails, with several cars coming to rest in the river. Part of the bridge and an unknown length of the track were damaged. The video was shot on August 22nd and 24th.

**Many thanks to Richard for the info about the catwalk and Maryann for the info about the derailment. You will notice the repair work done on the northwest side of the trestle due to the derailment. The metal catwalk and railing have been replaced with ones made of wood.
