West Fort William

Swing Bridge West Fort William Station Empire Junction

The West Fort William Station was the main station of the GTP and was located at Milepost 0.

This station was likely in use from when the line opened in 1908 until 1916 or 1917 when all functions were shifted to the Fort William Station. In an interesting arrangement, it was situated 0.5 miles east of the mainline on the north bank of the Kaministiquia River and included nearby freight shed. Meanwhile, its terminal facilities including the roundhouse were 1.5 miles away on the south side of the river. The station was likely a GTP Type “E” station that was very common on the line. It appears to have survived until the early 1960s at which point it was sold and demolished.
