National Transcontinental Railway Grant Subdivision

The National Transcontinental Railway Grant Subdivision began in Grant, Ontario and made its way 131.23 miles to Armstrong, Ontario.

Part of the National Transcontinental District 2, it was bounded on the east by the Hearst Subdivision and on the west by the Armstrong Subdivision. In 1924, the completion of the Nakina Cut-off shortened the subdivision by 19 miles. As a result, the eastern divisional point was relocated from Grant to Nakina, and Nakina Station was moved three miles west to accommodate the change. The station’s original site was renamed Shamokan Station on the Pagwa Subdivision. The newly restructured line became known as the Kowkash Subdivision, connecting to the Caramat Subdivision in the south and the Pagwa Subdivision (formerly the Hearst Subdivision) in the east.

In 1964, the Kowkash Subdivision was merged with the Caramat Subdivision, creating one continuous line from Hornepayne, Ontario to Armstrong. Coupled with this and the abandonment of the Pagwa Subdivision in 1986, Nakina lost its status as divisional point.
