Dexter/Raith

Horne Pit Dexter/Raith Station Linko Station

Dexter, later Raith, was an important station on the line located near the community of Raith, ON at Milepost 56.9/58.5/0/28.6/28.3.

Initially named Dexter, Raith was one of the few stations on the line that did not follow the typical alphabetical naming pattern, as Horne was to the east and it should have been “I” (it could have been fulfilled by the “I” in Raith). Apparently it was done to mimic the nearby Canadian Pacific Railway station. The name was changed to Raith in late 1910 or early 1911, likely to coincide with the construction of the GTP Type “E” station in 1911. It is unknown why the name was changed. Initially home to a water tank and wye, coal facilities were added around 1915 when it became a divisional point with the splitting of the line into the Fort William and Raith subdivisions (it remained a divisional point until mid 1919). At some point the original wye was dismantled and moved slightly west and enlarged. There was also a connecting track/spur which connected the line to the Canadian Pacific Railway which was co-located in the community. Timetables indicate it was active from 1942 to 1952 and from 1986 to 1993; however, a 1914-1915 map of the station shows the spur, which means it could date back to the construction of the line. In November 1959, CN announced that the station building would be decommissioned and it was sold the next year, by which time the water tank, coal tower and wye had also been removed. There was a post office at Raith from 1910 to 1988?

Raith and its siding remained on the line until it was abandoned in 1994.

There are several videos of the station and area at Raith in the playlist below.
