Horne Pit

Horne Station Horne Pit Dexter/Raith Station

The Horne Pit was located west of Horne Station near Raith, ON at Milepost 53.8/25.2.

The large ballast pit that was attached to the line at the west end and stretched north of the grade. Although the exact dates are unknown, the large spur (4000+ feet) was definitely in use between 1911 and 1915 and was one of three major pits in operation at the time, the other two being Dona and Unaka. The census record of 1911 lists 26 labourers at the pit, mostly immigrants from Galicia.
