Fort William GTP
Fort William Station Empire Junction
The Fort William Station was owned and operated by Canadian Pacific Railway and was located at Milepost 0.
Because this portion of the Grand Trunk Pacific/National Transcontinental Railway system was a branch line that was built to give the GTP/NTR access to Lake Superior, it had no east-west connections to communities in the immediate vicinity. Therefore, an arrangement was struck with Canadian Pacific Railway to allow the Lake Superior Branch to have access to the CPR station in Fort William. This station, built in 1910, became a “Union Station” for a number of years. To facilitate the arrangement, a branch was built along Empire Avenue from the station to Empire Junction where it connected with the mainline.
It appears the station was in use from 1910 until 1921 when stations were consolidated following the creation of Canadian National.
