CN Bruce Lake Subdivision
The Bruce Lake Subdivision was a branch line constructed by Canadian National Railway to haul iron ore.
It was completed in 1967 and saw its first traffic in March 1968 hauling pelletized iron ore from Stelco Inc.’s (Steel Company of Canada) newly opened Griffith Mine near Red Lake, ON. The line ran north from Milepost 50.5 of the Redditt Subdivision, known as Bruce Lake/Carroll Junction, for 66.16 miles. The iron was transported via the Redditt Subdivision and the Graham Subdivision to the ore docks in Thunder Bay and then to Stelco’s mill in Hamilton.
From 1968 to 1986, the mine produced 22.9 millions tons of iron ore pellets. The last train to run on the line was in February 1986 and the mine closed a month later in March. In August 1988, CN received approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) to abandon line and remove the rails. You can read more about the CTA decision here.
